New Threads

The Milwaukee Bucks have new alternate jerseys. Nike has been busy rolling out new uniforms inspired by the cities of NBA franchises. Milwaukee’s jerseys this year pay homage to the organization’s MECCA era. The period ran from the late 70’s and into the mid 80’s. It was one of the most successful stretches in Buck’s history.

We were first reintroduced to the MECCA branding last year when the Bucks hosted the Celtics at UW-Milwaukee’s Panther Arena. Known as the, “Return to the MECCA,” the game featured vintage uniforms and an alternate court. Not only did the game sell out, but it garnered a lot of media coverage. Here’s an aerial view:

Continuing off the success of the Return to the MECCA, Nike and the Bucks decided to bring it back for the ’18-’19 season along with matching jerseys. Looking at the jersey’s, I cannot help but think of the Buck’s current tagline, “You gotta respect the past to own the future.”

Since their release, the jerseys have been considered one of the most polarizing uniforms from Nike’s new collection. I personally don’t like them. The alternate court is cool, but the jerseys remind me of something Ronald McDonald would wear to play pickup at the local YMCA. I was hoping the Bucks would opt for a uniform that gave a nod to the state’s brewing heritage. Especially this year when Milwaukee Brewers made it to the NLCS.

Love 'em or hate 'em, we will get our first glimpse of the jersey in action on November 19th.  The Bucks will also sport the jerseys a dozen times throughout the year - about 11 times too many.

But I digress. Here are my top 5 picks from the entire collection.

5. Oklahoma City Thunder - Honoring Oklahoma’s Native history

4. Brooklyn Nets - Inspired by Biggie Smalls

3. Minneapolis - Nod to the late Prince.

2. Miami Heat - Miami Vice

1. Toronto - OVO
